What we found out about SEO after adding videos to blogs

Last quarter we ran some SEO experiments by adding videos to few of our clients top performing blogs. Our hypothesis was that we could increase engagement because videos would cause users to stay on the page longer. When the data came in we were surprised to see how much of an affect the video had on keyword positioning and organic traffic.

How adding videos to your blog can help with SEO (Search Engine Optimization):

Increased engagement: Videos can increase engagement on your blog, which can lead to more time on site, more page views, and more social shares. This increased engagement can signal to search engines that your content is valuable and relevant, which can help to improve your search rankings.

Rich media: Videos are considered a type of rich media, which can help to make your content more engaging and interesting. Search engines may give a boost to pages that include rich media, as it can signal that the content is of high quality and provides a better user experience.

Keyword optimization: When adding videos to your blog, be sure to optimize them for keywords that you want to rank for. This includes adding keywords in the video title, description, and tags. This will help search engines understand the topic of the video and how it relates to your blog post.

Video Sitemaps: By creating and submitting a video sitemap to search engines, you are providing them with a list of all the videos on your site, along with the relevant metadata such as video title, description, and duration. This can help search engines to find and index your videos more easily.

Backlinks: Videos can also help to generate backlinks to your blog. When you embed your videos on other sites, you are creating opportunities for other websites to link back to your blog. Backlinks are a key factor in SEO, as they signal to search engines that other websites consider your content to be valuable and credible.

YouTube SEO: By uploading your videos to YouTube, you can also benefit from YouTube’s own SEO. YouTube is the second largest search engine, and it can drive a significant amount of traffic to your website.

If you do it right, and with a little love from Google, adding videos to your blog can help to increase traffic and overall conversions. The idea is too signal the high quality of your content, optimize your keywords and generate backlinks and benefits from YouTube’s own SEO (which is also Google).
